Q: What is best way to disperse fund excess to maintain our AA group?

  • Question received recently from a regional group in NSW:
I am the current treasurer for our group. We have been having disagreement/discussion within the group conscience as to the best way to disperse fund excess to the maintenance of our group. We are currently sending 60% to district, 30% to GSO and 10% to Area, but I am wondering if there is an Australian policy or guide on this?

Decide Prudent Reserve First

Each Group is autonomous so your group can distribute its excess funds, over and above its prudent reserve, as it sees it.

The 60:30:10 is the suggested financial plan for groups with the two arms of service in Australia (based on the US model). ie 60% for the local CSO. 30% to the nation GSO and 10% to your Area.

Now as your group does not have a local CSO in your Area (?), then It is suggested that your local equivalent is your District. So what your group is doing is most appropriate – provided that your DIstrict is actually using money to spread the AA message via public information etc.

Group Decides Its Own Formula

AA money is supposed to be working money not just sitting in bank accounts around the country (other than prudent reserves)

There are other options (with Links) or your group to support too.

AA80 National Convention 2024
International Sponsorship Fund Donation
Loners International
Remote Communities

Given where you are you might consider a regular donation to Remote Communities Fund instead of District if it is not actively using money,

So your group could do a 60:30:10 but like this
60%: Remote Communities
30%: GSO
10%: Area

Or if your local District is doing some PI then a 30:30:30:10 plan
30%: District
30%: Remote Communities
30%: GSO
10%: Area

Other Options

Your group can also make one-off or regular donations to
• AA80 National Convention 2024
• International Sponsorship Fund Donation
* Loners International
