In my early days I was given some basic suggestions, especially for the festive season
- “bookend” the situation by calling a member before and after – letting them know I was facing a tricky situation.
- Making sure I had my own transport (or other options to leave eg money for a taxi/someone to pick me up) so I would not eel trapped and could leave it I needed to.
- Always make sure I had non-alcoholic drinks (by taking some if necessary).
- Making sure I had a glass with me and topped up regularly,. So if asked if I’d like a drink, I could simply say “Thanks I am OK, I have one”
- Use the Serenity Prayer
- Visualise all the members of AA in a single line behind me – “AA has just my back”
- Remember other people can be anxious in social setting too. Try to think of ways to engage them in conversation. Many people like to talk about themselves, their families, and lifestyle etc.
