Service Coordinators support the work of Alcoholics Anonymous across Australia by helping to connect members involved in specific service areas. These roles help share experience, encourage cooperation between Areas and Districts, and support the flow of information across the Fellowship.
Service Coordinators operate at a national level, working alongside the General Service Board and the General Service Office. Their role is to help carry the message by supporting service activity in key areas of AA work.
Service Coordinators do not direct or manage service activity in Areas or Groups. Instead, they help share experience, provide information, and encourage cooperation between members engaged in similar service.
Areas of Service
AA Australia currently has Service Coordinators supporting several important service areas, including:
Corrections
Supporting members who carry the AA message into prisons and correctional facilities.
PIPA – Public Information and Professional Awareness
Helping members share information about AA with professionals, organisations, and the wider community.
Remote Communities
Encouraging AA service efforts that help carry the message to alcoholics living in remote and regional communities.
Treatment & Accessibility
Supporting cooperation with treatment centres, hospitals, and rehabilitation services.
Online Services
Supporting the development and sharing of experience around online meetings.
Young People in AA (YPAA)
Supporting communication and cooperation between members involved in Young People in AA activities and events, helping to share experience and encourage service among younger members of the Fellowship.
Role of a Service Coordinator
Service Coordinators help strengthen communication and shared experience across AA service activities. Their work may include:
- Sharing experience and resources between Areas
- Supporting communication between service committees
- Helping identify service needs and opportunities
- Providing information to the General Service Board and Conference when requested
- Encouraging participation in service within their area of focus
Service Coordinators often work with volunteers across Australia who are engaged in similar service work.
Working Together in Service
The work of Service Coordinators helps ensure that experience gained in one part of the Fellowship can benefit others. By sharing information and encouraging cooperation, these roles support AA’s ability to carry the message to alcoholics who still suffer.
