What Is an Area?
An Area is part of AA’s General Service Structure that brings together Districts and Groups within a defined geographic region.
Areas provide a way for Groups to share their experience and take part in decisions that affect AA as a whole.
How Areas Support AA
Areas help coordinate service across a region and ensure that the voice of Groups is heard beyond the local level.
This often includes:
- bringing together Districts and Groups to share experience
- discussing service matters that affect AA in the region
- supporting communication between Groups and the wider structure
- encouraging participation in service
- helping form a collective view on matters affecting AA
Carrying the Message in the Community
Areas support service activities that help make AA more visible and accessible across the region.
This may include:
- supporting public information and cooperation with professionals
- sharing experience between Districts on effective outreach
- helping coordinate service efforts across larger geographic areas
The aim is to help ensure that AA’s message of recovery is available wherever it is needed.
The Area Assembly
The Area Assembly is where Groups are represented through their General Service Representatives (GSRs).
At Assembly:
- members share experience and discuss service matters
- topics are considered and informed by group conscience
- decisions are made that guide service within the Area
The Assembly is an expression of AA’s group conscience at the Area level.
The Area Delegate
Each Area elects an Area Delegate and an Alternate Delegate.
The Area Delegate:
- represents the Area at the General Service Conference
- carries the views and experience of the Area forward
- reports back to the Area after Conference
This helps ensure that Groups are connected to AA’s national service decisions.
How Areas Fit into AA
Areas are part of the structure that connects Groups across Australia.
Through this structure:
- Groups share their experience through GSRs
- Districts and Areas bring that experience together
- the General Service Conference reflects the collective conscience of AA
In this way, Areas help ensure that AA services remain guided by the Groups they serve.
