What Does a District Committee Member (DCM) Do?

What Is a DCM?

A District Committee Member (DCM) is a trusted servant who helps connect AA groups within a District to the wider Fellowship and service structure.

The DCM supports communication between Groups and the Area, helping ensure that local experience and group conscience are shared beyond the group level.

How the DCM Supports AA

The DCM’s role is to help Groups stay connected, informed, and supported in service.

This often includes:

  • sharing information between the Area and local Groups
  • helping Groups stay informed about service activities and opportunities
  • supporting communication across the District
  • encouraging participation in service
  • helping bring local experience and concerns into Area discussions

Carrying the Message in the Community

While the DCM does not carry out all service work directly, they help support and coordinate the work happening across the District.

This may include:

  • supporting public information and cooperation with professionals
  • helping connect Groups with service opportunities
  • encouraging participation in activities that make AA visible and accessible

The aim is to help ensure that AA’s message of recovery is available to those who need it.

How the DCM Works with Groups

The DCM works closely with Group Service Representatives (GSRs).

Through District meetings, the DCM helps:

  • bring together the shared experience of Groups
  • support discussion of local service needs
  • carry the collective voice of the District forward

The role is guided by group conscience and grounded in service.

How the DCM Fits into AA

The DCM is part of the link between Groups and the wider AA structure.

Through this connection:

  • Groups share their experience at the District level
  • Districts contribute to Area discussions
  • Areas help shape the direction of AA services nationally

In this way, the DCM helps ensure that the voice of the Group remains at the centre of AA service.
