Symbols and Metphors
Whilst I don’t think in pictures, I find creating scenarios to understand an idea or spiritual principle symbolically useful in my sponsoring and my own sobriety.
Last year, when a fellow member was facing some difficult medical tests, that may have had serious outcomes, I found myself saying “At times like these, it seems the only thing we can do, is to sit together on the 3rd step”. They found that comforting – we are not alone with our fears.
Creativity and Insight
More recently, another member has had huge challenges facing early trauma, and I found myself expanding on this idea. The step ended up with a thick mattress, cushions and rugs, a magic hamper with continuous healthy food, a magic tap with an unending supply of crystal-clear clean water, and a magic toilet/ bidet to take away our waste. All the things we needed to spend a lot of time recovering from a type of burnout.
Then, as this person got more energy, we started talking about “resting on the 3rd step together”. This being after times of their acting on another step or two and finding even small steps exhausting. This analogy may morph again to suit what we face in new situations.
And I’m interested to see what’s next 🙂
