What is an Area Delegate?
An Area Delegate is a trusted servant elected by an Area to represent its Groups at the General Service Conference.
The Delegate helps carry the voice and experience of the Area into national discussions, and brings Conference outcomes back to the Groups.
How the Area Delegate Supports AA
The Area Delegate helps ensure that Groups are connected to AA’s national service structure.
This often includes:
- representing the Area at the General Service Conference
- carrying the views and experience of the Area into discussions
- helping inform Conference decisions through shared experience
- reporting back to the Area and its Groups after Conference
- supporting communication between the Conference and the Fellowship
Carrying the Message Through Service
The Delegate’s role is not to speak for themselves, but to reflect the collective experience of the Area.
This means:
- listening to Groups through the Area structure
- being guided by group conscience
- sharing Conference experience in a way that supports understanding across AA
In this way, the Delegate helps ensure that AA’s services remain grounded in the experience of its members.
Working with the Area
The Area Delegate works closely with the Area Assembly, GSRs, and other trusted servants.
Through this connection, the Delegate helps:
- gather and understand the views of Groups
- prepare for Conference discussions
- support informed participation in AA service
The role is based on rotation and guided by service, not authority.
How the Area Delegate Fits into AA
The Area Delegate is part of the link between Groups and the General Service Conference.
Through this connection:
- Groups share their experience through GSRs and the Area
- Delegates carry that experience to Conference
- Conference reflects the collective conscience of AA as a whole
This helps ensure that AA’s services are guided by the Fellowship.
