What Is the General Service Conference?
The General Service Conference is where AA’s collective group conscience is expressed at a national level.
It brings together Delegates from Areas across Australia, along with members of the General Service Board and General Service Office, to discuss and guide the services that support AA as a whole.
How the Conference Supports AA
The Conference helps ensure that AA services remain guided by the experience of its members.
This often includes:
- discussing matters that affect AA as a whole
- considering topics raised by Areas
- sharing experience from across the Fellowship
- helping guide the direction of AA services nationally
- supporting unity and consistency across AA
Carrying the Message Through Service
The work of the Conference supports AA’s primary purpose — to carry the message to the alcoholic who still suffers.
It does this by:
- helping ensure services remain aligned with AA’s principles
- supporting communication across the Fellowship
- sharing experience that helps AA remain accessible and effective
The Conference does not govern AA. It reflects the collective conscience of the Fellowship and helps guide service accordingly.
Who Takes Part
The Conference includes:
- Area Delegates, representing Groups across Australia
- members of the General Service Board
- representatives from the General Service Office
Each participant brings experience from their area of service, contributing to a shared understanding of what is needed across AA.
How the Conference Fits into AA
The Conference is part of the structure that connects Groups across the country.
Through this process:
- Groups share their experience through GSRs and Areas
- Delegates carry that experience to Conference
- the Conference reflects the collective conscience of AA
This helps ensure that AA services remain grounded in the experience of the Fellowship.
