What Does the Board Do?

What Is the Board?

The General Service Board is made up of trusted servants who are responsible for supporting AA services on behalf of the Fellowship.

The Board works to ensure that services remain aligned with AA’s principles and responsive to the needs of AA as a whole.

How the Board Supports AA

The Board helps oversee and support the services that connect and sustain AA across Australia.

This often includes:

  • supporting the work of the General Service Office
  • helping ensure services are maintained and available
  • contributing to planning and oversight of AA services
  • supporting communication across the Fellowship
  • helping ensure continuity in service

Carrying the Message Through Service

The Board’s work supports AA’s primary purpose — to carry the message to the alcoholic who still suffers.

This includes:

  • helping ensure services remain focused on AA’s purpose
  • supporting responsible use of AA resources
  • helping maintain services that connect the Fellowship

The Board does not govern AA. It serves the Fellowship and is guided by its collective conscience.

How the Board Fits into AA

The Board is part of AA’s General Service Structure.

Through this structure:

  • Groups share their experience through Areas and Conference
  • the Conference reflects the Fellowship’s group conscience
  • the Board helps carry out the work that follows

This helps ensure that AA services remain grounded in the Fellowship.
